A Beginner's Guide: 4 Do's And Don'ts For Selecting The Right Leotard For Ballet

Posted on: 1 August 2017

If you or your child happens to be new to ballet and dance, you may need some guidance on choosing the right apparel for performance, comfort, confidence, and appearance. Because ballet leotards are not made to be"one design fits all," you need to consider a few aspects. Before you set out to purchase your new ballet leotard, use the following "Do's and Don'ts" as your guideline:

1. DO Consider the Materials Used

The materials you choose for your new ballet leotard can make a difference when it comes to fit and comfort. You'll need the material to be form fitting and not prone to sagging. However, it should also "give" or stretch a bit while worn. This will allow for a free movement as you dance.

For this reason, spandex is a good material to choose. Although the spandex will "give" or stretch as you move, it is not prone to sag and will retain its shape. Spandex is also quite durable, so you won't need to worry about rips and tears or have to replace it as often as other materials. Spandex is an excellent choice for a young child who tends to wear out their apparel quickly.

Cotton is another good choose. Cotton material is comfortable and allows your skin to "breathe." However, it is not quite as durable as spandex; therefore, you may need to replace your cotton leotards more frequently.

As an alternative to cotton and spandex, you might consider nylon for your ballet leotard. Nylon material is lightweight and comfortable, although it doesn't provide as much long-lasting wear as spandex.

2. DON'T Dismiss the Importance of Color

As you shop for you new ballet leotards, you may be inclined to neglect the significance of the color. However, the color you choose can enhance your appearance and boost your self confidence as you perform. It is a good idea to choose the color of your ballet leotards based on your skin tone and hair color. A good rule to follow is to go with a contrast.

If your skin and hair are on the light or fair side, choose a bright or bold color, such as a vibrant red or green. Darker skin tones might look best in pastel colors or neutrals. Of course, there are exceptions to the rule, so it's a good idea to try out a few different colors and see how well they might complement your appearance.

3. DO Familiarize Yourself With the Various Styles of Ballet Leotards

There are several styles of ballet leotards, and you will want to choose the design that best suits your style, personality, and body type. Camisole leotards with thin spaghetti straps are most suitable for young dancers or those with a small body frame. A tank leotard will typically have slightly thicker straps, although you may prefer a capped sleeve or a long-sleeved style. Both the cap and long-sleeve designs are perfect for those with broad shoulders.

If you need some extra support in the chest, look for a leotard with built-in support for larger busts. This design will not typically feature a boat or scoop neck, but rather a neckline that does not dip so much. For those with short legs and torso, a high leg or "jazz cut" style leotard is most suitable and preferred.

4. DON'T Be Afraid to Go Bold and Embellish The Look

Gone are the days of boring, solid colors for ballet and dance leotards. The modern trend in ballet leopards is bold and embellished. The look is especially welcoming for youngsters. Do you want that shining little superstar offspring of yours to stand out and be noticed? Or maybe you are the bold and glamorous type looking to light up the stage. Either way, look for sequined leotards or those embellished with beads, lace, or gemstones. Get creative and let your style shine through.

The Power of Color

As a kid, I didn’t think much about the clothes I wore. I was only concerned with how comfortable they were. I often erroneously associated stylish clothing with pain. I didn’t think I could be comfortable in anything the latest runway models were wearing. Besides dressing in clothing that was too large for my body, I typically always chose black items to wear. I mistakenly believed wearing something black would make me look thinner regardless of the style or cut of a piece of clothing. Thankfully, in my adult years, I’ve learned to embrace color. Wearing my favorite colors always brightens my mood and gives me confidence. On this blog, I hope you will learn ways to add vivid, cheerful color to your wardrobe.
